17. Favorite protagonist and why!
I’m torn between two women: Anne Elliott in Jane Austen’s Persuasion and Jane Eyre in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. They’re both very strong women in subtle ways, particularly for the time period they were written in. Anne is the core of her family and friends, even if few people in her world realize it, and Jane comes through an impossible childhood and a very painful first love with her integrity intact.
I suppose what I like best is that Anne and Jane show you don’t have to be musclebound or carry a weapon, or even have social or political power, in order to be strong. All you have to be is true to yourself.
