And then it was back together, cold and prim, and her voice was sharp: “Very well, Ronald,” as she gathered up her books.

He rolled his eyes. “Hermione—”

“I’ll just be on my way and you can study on your own.”

“I didn’t mean it like that!”

She stopped, clutching her books—a familiar pose, a familiar expression, disapproval and disappointment and why can’t you ever be what I need you to be?

Ron swallowed.

“Then how did you mean it?”

“You’re always bloody smarter than me,” he muttered finally. “It’s infuriating.”

Small shift. Small. But enough.

“Well.” She took a deep breath. “If you can get over your hatred of me perhaps we should resume studying.”

He nodded. “I can do that.” And he nearly melted with relief when she sat down at his side again.
