These days, Charlie is just Catholic enough to believe that no happiness comes without disaster following.
When he thinks about Darien—long-legged, puppy-eyed, poofy-haired, badly-dressed Darien—his heart skips like a little girl in a meadow full of daisies. It’s weird to think you’re the one for me and not be utterly terrified by it. It’s weird to be unquestioningly, unflinchingly happy.
So when does it end?
Because it will end. Charlie knew this going in, knew it the moment Darien showed up again with his sandwiches and his quotations and his big feet. Someday Darien would walk out that door, and when he walked in again he would no longer be in love with Charlie.
Of course that’s Charlie’s past and Darien’s future but when he tries to work it out his head starts aching. It adds up to one thing: someday, Charlie would just have to get by without Darien.
It, in a word, sucks, mate.
